Visiting the Randfontein Vehicle Registration Authority (also referred to as the traffic department) can sometimes be frustrating and time-consuming.
To make your trip more effective and to prevent you having to make a second trip because you forgot an important document, the Authority has advised that as of 1 November 2015, it is by law necessary to provide the traffic department with documentary verification of address, so that vehicle and driver’s licence renewal notices and any other traffic-related communications can be delivered promptly.
You are required to bring the following documentation with you when attempting any transaction at the traffic department:
1. Proof of your identity:
• If you are a South African citizen, your SA identification document (ID) with your photo, full name, surname and identity number
• If you are a foreign national, an ID document from your home country and your passport, or a traffic register number certificate
2. Proof of residence:
• A document indicating both your postal and residential addresses; for example, a clothing, cellphone, telephone, or water and electricity account statement that is not older than three months
If the document doesn’t have your name on it, the person in whose name it was issued must provide you with an affirmation letter declaring that you reside at that address. Bring both the affirmation letter and proof of residence (with your ID document) to the traffic department.
• If you do not have a residential address (for example, if you live in an informal settlement), it is necessary to contact your ward councillor for a proof of residence document.

The traffic department provides the following services to the community:
Registration of motor vehicles; licensing of motor vehicles; temporary permits; applications for learner’s licences; applications for driver’s licences; renewal of drivers’ licences; application for Public Driving Permits (PRDP) and applications and tests for roadworthy certification.
The traffic department invites community members to visit their website at www.randfontein.gov.za for more information. Alternatively, you can contact Bheki Mtshali, head of the department on 011 411 0378 or 074 142 2867.
