On 4 November, the Randfontein Executive Mayor, Mzi Khumalo, hosted the Youth in Fashion, Food, Arts and Culture Indaba at the IEC Hall.

The purpose of the Indaba was to interact with young people who specialise in food as chefs and dieticians, in fashion as designers and clothing specialists, and in arts and culture with the creative craft of poetry. The intention was to create a dialogue that would express the frustrations, hardships and difficulties that young people experience when trying to make these industries work for them.

The Youth Office involved its sister departments in the Gauteng Provincial Government, giving them the opportunity to present their intentions and make the programmes offered by these departments available to the youth, with a specific focus on the the issue of funding and grants.

The following Departments were involved:

Gauteng Economic Development, Gauteng Tourism, Gauteng Enterprise Propeller, West Rand District Municipality and the Rand West City Supply Chain.

The Executive Mayor told the Herald that he has made a commitment, with the Gauteng Department of Sports, Recreation and Culture, to build an Arts Centre that would cater for all specialities.

Sfiso Dikana, the Rand West Youth Coordinator, is working with the Mayor to reach out to the youth and provide them with a safe haven where they can express their creativity.
