WAWA Toekomsrus sends powerful message after taking to the streets to create awareness as part of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.
Woman Against Woman and Child Abuse (Wawa) took to the streets and did everything in their power to create awareness as part of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.
Wawa made it their prerogative to touch as many lives as possible during this crucial period. With the festive season having arrived, their doors as a victim empowerment centre will be wide open to attend to the needs of women and children.
Enrico Bhana from Wawa said, “This year was so much different. Through all the ups and downs the organisation experienced, we can truly say that Wawa is a community organisation and cares for the poorest of the poor in the Rand West area and Gauteng.”
Francina Julius, social auxiliary worker added, “As an organisation we saw the need for extra staff members during this key period, hence we employed 15 part-time volunteers (Game Changers) both in Toekomsrus and at our satellite centre in Mohlakeng. These guys had a never-say-no attitude and really did it for the love of the community. They were awesome.”
Tebogo Isacks, a part-time volunteer continued, “It was an eye-opener for me as a part-time volunteer walking door to door to highlight the plight and importance of gender-based violence in my community. It was an experience of a lifetime.”
Wawa kicked off the 16 days of activism on 25 November. They spoke to everyone in Toekomsrus and the surrounding areas – from the youth to the elderly to people with disabilities.
According to him, they made it clear that Wawa is there for everyone and that it is time to stand up to abuse in any form and way. The last day of the activism campaign ends on 11 December with a kiddies Christmas sporting fun day in the back yard of the Toekomsrus Police Station.
“Wawa is at the community’s service and we thank the Department of Social Development and South African Police Service for their support and partnership. Together we can all make a difference,” Bhana said.
