2017 SONA around the corner
Not to be missed – Government confirms 2017 State of the Nation Address (SONA) to take place on 9 February.
President Jacob Zuma will deliver the 2017 State of the Nation Address (SONA) to a joint sitting of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces at 7pm on Thursday, 9 February.
According to a statement released earlier this week, the address sets out government’s key policy objectives and deliverables for the year ahead, highlights achievements and challenges, and maps out the way forward.
In his 2016 SONA message to parliament, President Zuma focused on the economy in an effort to stave off a threatened credit ratings downgrade. Cutting red tape, fast-tracking partnerships with the private sector, and encouraging tourism were among the subjects focused on. Most of all, he also promised to cut out wasteful government expenditure in the future.
A SONA is an annual address by the President to parliament as the representative of the people on the state of the South African nation. It is an opportunity for the President to take stock of our country’s domestic and foreign situation and to chart a common direction that we should take to enhance and advance our efforts to achieve a better life for all. The 2017 SONA will be Zuma’s 10th such address.
