A poem from the heart to Reeva
Municipality employee and the right hand of Executive Mayor Mzi Khumalo has another side of her – poetry.
Caroline Setsiba, a municipal employee and the Executive Mayor, Mzi Khumalo’s right hand, has another side to her, other than giving her all at the Rand West City Local Municipality.
Caroline’s other side is her passion for poetry and creativity. She will be publishing her own book of poems soon, at the latest by the end of May. Caroline started focusing on her poetry in 2012, when she began to take her writing seriously. The subjects she writes about range from her mother, to a tree, the importance of education, the political struggle in 1976, love and many other things.
Caroline told the Herald that once, when she was in a Paris flea market, she saw a couple so caught up in their world of love that they did not see anything or anybody around them. She grabbed a pen and paper, and immediately began writing a poem about them while she was walking around.
Caroline has two professors for mentors, and she also writes speeches for the mayor, and many more individuals. This is the poem she wrote at 7.02am on 15 February 2013, the day after the news broke that Reeva Steenkamp had been shot by Oscar Pistorius:
Early morning on Sheila’s day
As St Valentine’s arrow began
Piercing through lovers’ hearts
As the world was partly painted
Red with lovers’ red roses
one lover’s blades were sharpened
To cut through his lover’s life
When men held bunches of roses
in their hands for their lovers
The blade runner was holding a loaded lethal firearm
The woman who was once dearly loved in life never knew
She will be loved to death
The long bloody Valentine blade
Cut her life short violently
The blade runner chased the beauty queen
To the grave in cold blood
Circulated from love that was so warm
“Oh my gosh it’s a damn accident”
I meant to give her love till death us do part
Not roses red from blood at the grave
From Valentine’s bullets and blades!
Award this man with an Oscar
To keep at Pretoria Central Prison
A memento for deadly blades
Throw keys of the iron bars
Down to Reeva’s grave
To take as evidence of evil to heaven
The Valentines blades!
