#FridayBraaiDay: Some braai side ideas from R’fontein

A vuil Coke, a salad and braaibroodjies are just some of the side dishes mentioned by 'Teiners in this week's #FridayBraaiDay.

“Anything my wife can do in the oven, I can do on the braai,” was the top comment on social media in this week’s #FridayBraaiDay Facebook feature.

The Herald asked ‘Teiners what they made to accompany their braaivleis. There is a running joke in town that chicken is a vegetable because it only grows centimetres off the ground and subsequently it counts as a side-dish at a braai.

Last week’s top comment winner, William Knight, said a beer-butt chicken, or as he refers to it – a p@*phol hoendertjie – is the perfect braai side.

Adéle Lotriet said a dirty or vuil Coke (a Coke with a rather generous amount of brandy) goes particularly well with lamb chops.

When the Herald took to the streets of the ‘Tein to find people braai’ing for #FridayBraaiDay, we did not have to go far – a Randfontein couple has a food truck just outside our office and we went to hear what they had to say about #BraaiSides.

Adri and Hein Kok said while they like their standard braai sides such as salad and braaibroodjies, they enjoy pap with their braaivleisie.

They also said a pap tart is a winner at any braai. Adri said the tart can be made on the braai and comes out so good, you’ll forget about the meat on your plate.

Tannie Adri and oom Hein’s pap tart:

What you need

• Pap

• Onions

• Bacon

• Green pepper

• Red pepper

• Chilli

• Cheese

• Cream

Method

Put a fire-resistant dish on the braai and layer the pap with the other ingredients in between. Pour the cream over the top of the dish, and top with grated cheese. Leave on the braai until everything is cooked through and serve. Perhaps with a vuil coke.
