A win for visually impaired persons in the West Rand
New assistive library technology has been introduced in one West Rand municipality.
The West Rand’s visually impaired community has had a major win recently.
The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, in partnership with the Mogale City Local Municipality, has opened a number of computer workstations for visually impaired persons.
The workstations have been installed at the recently opened Kagiso Library. The Department explained that the stations are to serve residents of Kagiso residents and the surrounding areas.
The Department gave the assurance that this will not be for long, as more such workstations are to be established in libraries throughout the West Rand and the greater Gauteng.
The programme is part of the Gauteng City Region’s efforts to ensure access to its services by all in the Gauteng community.
The aim, they say, is to introduce assistive technology aimed at increasing independence, participation and achievement for visually impaired and blind persons in the province.
The workstations will now allow persons with visual disabilities to access the internet, and listen to audio books, newspapers and magazines.
The stations will also be used to compile CVs and other important documents they may need.
