Five lions on the loose: ‘Roar heard in a specific area’
Still no luck for authorities on whereabouts of five lions on the loose on the far West Rand. Someone did, however, hear a roar ...
Authorities in Fochville on the far West Rand are still searching for the five lions that are on the loose.
The latest is that roars were heard from an unknown location in the district on Monday, 18 September. Photos of the hunt for the lions have since also emerged.
In a recent update, Drew Abrahamson from the Captured in Africa Foundation, confirmed there are five lions on the loose in the farming area of Fochville and the Pit-Track Canine Conservation, the police and community members have been trying fruitlessly to locate them.

“We have had air support for the past week to see if we can locate the lions, but the grass is very long and the terrain mostly open fields. The landscape also plays a vital part in the location because the lions blend in,” said Drew.
The news of the four additional lions on the loose came to light while the police were investigating the death of a calf. Both farmers and security guards have seen the five lions but search teams have so far been unable to establish where the predators came from.
On Monday morning, 18 September, Drew informed the Herald that it had been a busy and exhausting weekend. They set up a camera trap at the bait site and did four call-ups while driving to various spots.

“We only left site at 5.30am and got home around 7.30am Sunday morning,” said Drew.
Drew added that they’d had a call from someone who said they heard a roar in a specific area and they will concentrate on the specific area.
“We also have some images of the bait site, which was visited by a crow!” said Drew.
The search will continue until all five lions are safely captured.
