The festive season is around the corner and what more than a beach body do you want?

Looking good and feeling good about yourself is definitely a priority among the nation’s people – young and old. The Herald recently met up with some local fitness instructors who gave us some advice and tips to get the summer body you always dreamt of.

Charlotte Booysen, Assistant General Manager of Planet Fitness Just Gym in Randfontein gave an in-depth fitness guideline for young and old. Her golden words are “Practice where you are the most comfortable”.

Professional Instructor, Storm Botha.

First of all, Charlotte said the best way to start your day is to drink a strong cup of black coffee. Then you are ready for a 40-minute exercise session. This can be running, jogging, or walking.

Charlotte added that if you want to lose weight, you must make use of cardio exercises such as circuit training, indoor cycling and indoor rowing. If you want to build muscle, you must do body and weight training such as sit ups, push ups, lunges, burpies and squats.

“The best at home exercise will be to jog or you can download some videos and programmes from the internet that will get you fit and in shape,” said Charlotte.

Charlotte added that if you want to go on a diet, you must know your body and learn how it functions.

Another local professional instructor, Storm Botha, added some more advice for the community.

“You do not need weighs to train at home. Even if you do not have time you can still practise at home. A simple exercise programme can lead to big changes,” said Storm.

He added that anybody can start with a routine of three basic exercises:

• Push ups

• Sit ups

• Squats

These exercises can be done in intervals of 20 or 10 seconds each for three rounds. After each week more rounds can be performed.

Storm feels that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and if you eat healthy food you can lose weight.

“If you are more active, you will lose more weight. Simple things such as trying out a new sport, going walking with your dogs, walking in the park and watching less television will all help,” said Storm.

He believes that a healthy lifestyle will have an impact on your whole life. This includes being happier and less stressed. Storm added that exercise can be done as a family or in a group and this could mean more family time.

Three things you need to have to become fit or lose weight:

• Dedication

• Determination

• Endurance

The golden rule everybody forgets is that you should sleep more than six hours a day and drink approximately three litres of water a day.

Benefits of exercising:

• Better sleep

• Stress relief

• It boosts immunity

• It’s anti-aging

• More energy

• More self-confidence

Exercise will depend on every individual’s preferences. Training can be done individually or in a group and must be done where each individual feel most comfortable.

“Remember every exercise counts and 30 minutes of any exercise a day is more than enough. You do not have to take a big step at once, small changes in your daily routine can make a big difference” said Storm.

Training can start at any age. The safest age is 16 but the best is to start today or tomorrow.
