Salon goes to great lengths for Cansa

A local hair salon decided to host their very first Shavathon and the public turned out en masse on Saturday, 7 October.

The Cancer Association of South Africa’s (Cansa) Shavathon is one of South Africa’s best-loved events that supports a very worthy cause, namely, showing solidarity with those affected by cancer.

Losing one’s hair is a common side-effect of cancer therapy – so shaving your head has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors. Colour-spraying your hair or paying a fee have become options for those who prefer not to shave their heads, or who can’t shave on the day.

NEWSPAPER ONLY — Zani van den Heever and Jo-Ann van der Watt got their hair sprayed.

On Saturday, 7 October, Salon Beaudine held its very first Shavathon and the public turned out en masse. Owner of the salon, Beaudine, told the Herald that some of her staff had family members who’d passed away because of cancer and that was one of the reasons why they decided to host the day.

“A lot of people decided to spray their hair, but unfortunately no one wanted to shave,” said Beaudine Beyleveldt.

The day didn’t just offer spraying and shaving – the community could also browse through a small flea market and the children could play on some jumping castles.

The salon staff have decided to host a Shavathon more often and by doing so, they hope to educate people about cancer and make a big difference in the community.
