How to: Weatherguard your home against severe weather

Guidelines to ensure your home fares better when unexpected bad weather hits.

With the recent storms that have hit our country, it is important to put safety measures in place to minimize damage to our homes as much as possible advises Dulux.

It’s said the extreme weather conditions are attributed to climate change and scientific studies indicate that they are going to become more frequent due to the rise in global temperature. These erratic weather conditions most often happen unexpectedly and taking necessary precautions ahead of time can make a big difference.

Below are some guidelines to ensure your home fares better when bad weather hits:

• Inspect your roof

Conduct a regular inspection and replace broken tiles and repair loose fascia boards. Roofs that are over 15 years old are at particular risk and should be inspected frequently, even if there are no apparent problems. As soon as leaks become obvious they should be repaired.

• Ensure your exterior is protected

For long lasting weather protection it is advisable to use Dulux Weatherguard® with Maxiflex® technology which has a 12 year guarantee and offers maximum stretch for tough and durable weather resistance. Its unique properties also make hairline cracks a problem of the past and the textured finish ensures that minor plaster imperfections remain hidden.

• Regularly check condition of trees

Trim trees on the property and removed dead branches regularly, paying particular attention to branches that could cause damage to your home during a storm. Check the condition of all trees in the garden and remove those that are at risk of being uprooted in strong winds.

• Be careful of loose items

Pack away items such as outdoor furniture, braais, braai grills, playground items as well as plastic tables and chairs before the storm hits. High winds can turn the most unexpected things into projectiles which might not just damage your property, but could also cause injury.

• Ensure gutters are firmly fixed

Check all the gutters and ensure they aren’t loose or clogged with moss or leaves. Make sure they are firmly fixed to the home as strong winds can tear gutters loose and cause significant damage.
