A stationary list for your Grade 1

Local Grade 1 teacher at Randfontein Christian Academy (RCA), Clarisse Venter gives you the parents a list of what stationery to buy this 2018 school year.

With the new school year around the corner and an empty school bag, parents need to plan for all the stationery they have to get for the child going to ‘big school’ for the first time.

Clarisse Venter, Grade 1 teacher at Randfontein Christian Academy (RCA), gave the Herald a list of all the things all Grade 1 children should have in their school bags:

• 30 cm ruler

• A set of three stacked plastic drawers (instead of the traditional pencil bag or case)

• Good quality HB pencils

• Erasers

• Pencil sharpener

• Red pen

• Whiteboard markers

• A4 whiteboard

• Colouring pencils

• Scissors

• Twist-out crayons

• Large glue sticks

• Feint-ruled exercise books

• Lever-arch file

• A4 poster board pads

• Flip files

• Box of tissues and six toilet rolls

• Liquid hand soap

• Wet wipes

• Modelling clay

Clarisse added that children need a healthy lunch box with sandwiches, a juice and enough water every day. A hat for break-time is very important if the school does not supply one.

“It is very important to mark your child’s stationery and if need be, some of it can be locked in a cupboard at the school. RCA allows the children to lock away some of their stationery, so that they will have enough throughout the year,” said Clarisse.

Lastly, Clarisse suggested that schoolchildren only bring the stationery and books they need on a daily basis to school, to avoid having to carry a heavy school bag.
