One killed, 10 injured in weekend crashes

One person was killed and at least 10 others injured in two separate vehicle accidents in and around Carletonville yesterday.

One person died while 10 others sustained injuries ranging from moderate to serious in two separate vehicle accidents in and around Carletonville on Sunday, 4 February.

Shortly before 9am, a man had to be airlifted to hospital after he was pinned under a bakkie following a collision on the R500 in Carletonville.

Werner Vermaak, ER24 spokesperson said, “ER24 and other services arrived at the scene of a collision involving two bakkies. A man with serious injuries was pinned underneath one of the vehicles. The local fire department had to use specialised equipment to lift the vehicle before he could be removed. Paramedics found that he had sustained multiple injuries and an emergency helicopter was called to airlift him to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

“Two other people had moderate injuries. They were treated on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care.”

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are not yet known. Local authorities attended the scene.

In the other accident at about 4.30pm, three people were injured seriously and four others sustained moderate injuries when the bakkie they travelled in overturned several times on the R501 approximately 10 kilometres outside Carletonville.

Vermaak said, “Our paramedics found the bakkie standing on the side of the road. All of its occupants had been ejected from it. Three people, including a 16-year-old girl, sustained serious injuries.

An emergency helicopter was called to the scene to airlift one of the seriously injured victims to hospital. Sadly, the patient succumbed to his injuries en route to hospital.

“The other two seriously injured patients were transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance. Four moderately injured patients were transported by ambulance to the Carletonville Hospital for further care. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet known.”
