The Randfontein Police are clearly taking domestic violence very seriously.
During Phase 1 of the Inaugural Community Safety Awards held at the Johannesburg City Hall on 22 February, the station won the Department of Safety’s Most Effective Victim Empowerment Centre title.
An ecstatic Brigadier Jacob Manamela, station commander for the Randfontein Police, collected the trophy.
“I am very proud of the achievement,” he said. “All the police stations in Gauteng took part, and winning means that we are truly serving our community.”
Gauteng’s Member of the Executive Council for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, was there to hand out the awards.
Brigadier Manamela said, “Getting this award is an acknowledgment of our service and a big motivation for the volunteers working at the centre, where we are assisted by two non-profit organisations.
“A big thank you is due to the volunteers working without a salary and delivering a very good service to the community.”
Sergeant Cathrine Dhlamini was also recently appointed by the Brigadier to assist the volunteers. She handles all the sexual offence cases reported to the centre, and is a trained and experienced member of the police force. The Randfontein Police are also busy establishing a Youth Desk, where they will be able to assist the youth with problems.
Brigadier Manamela also said that domestic violence is a huge problem in the area, and if couples have problems, they should seek the help of Social Services before the situation leads to further violence and possible death.
“Victims of domestic violence should not withdraw their cases,” he added.
On 16 March, Captain Leon Williams and Bongi Langa, Head of the Victim Empowerment Centre, went to Phase 2 of the Awards in Sandhurst, where they were nominated for the most Effective Victim Empowerment Centre (VEC) and the Most Responsible Police Officer awards.
