An opportunity of a life time was recently given to the residents of the Connie Mulder Centre. They were offered 29km rides around Randfontein town in a number of supercharged Subarus and Chevrolets, just for fun.
The residents could not hide their excitement as strings of V8 muscle cars roared their way into the Centre on Saturday, 14 April.
Deputy CEO at the centre, Riana Pompei said, “The chairperson of the SS Lumina Club, Jaco Niemand, came to us and asked if they could do something for our residents.
“He suggested that the club members take residents for rides around town in their powerful cars, so that they could experience being in a sports car, because most of them will never have an opportunity like this,” Riana said.
Jaco said, “We normally do charity work during the weekends. But this was a need. When I started with the Lumina Club, I already had the idea of coming to this centre and taking the residents on drives in these cars. We wanted them to be able to feel what it’s like to ride in a V8 turbo-charged sports car, because none of them is ever likely to be able to afford one of these vehicles. It turned out to be a great day for them.”
Jack Buys, chairman of Scooby Nation, a club for Subaru enthusiasts said, “We have been in existence for about four years, and do lots of charity outreach projects. Days like this are great as we have the chance to show people the cars, which they normally only see in magazines, and let them enjoy the experience of driving in them.”
Riana thanked the coordinators of the clubs, saying, “It was really generous of them to get involved at our centre. We want to give them a big thank you.”
