Firefighters to be celebrated in R’fontein
International Fire Fighters Day to be celebrated in Greenhills to honour the men and women who are risking their lives to rescue others.
The Randfontein Fire and Rescue Services will be commemorating International Firefighters’ Day on Friday, 4 May at the Greenhills Stadium.
According to Bennie Mohlabeng, regional commander for the Randfontein Fire and Rescue Services, the event is to recognise and honour the sacrifices made by firefighters to ensure communities and the environment are safe.
The programme is scheduled to run from 9am to 1pm.
International Firefighters’ Day is celebrated following a tragic event that happened in Linto Community, Australia, on December 2 1998. On the day, five firefighters were dispatched to help extinguish a fire, but as they headed into the hot zone, the wind switched direction, engulfing the truck in flames and killing all five members.
This unfortunate incident inspired the creation of this day.
International FireFighters’ Day celebrates the continued support of the dedicated firefighters who risk their lives their every day to save lives and properties in theor communities, and remembers those who have lost their lives in fires.
