How stress affects your health
Difficulty relaxing and quieting your mind can cause insomnia.
Everybody experiences stress at some time or another. There are, however, signs that you should look out for that indicate that stress is starting to affect you physically and emotionally. Here are some signs to look out for:
– Stress can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes.
– Emotional symptoms of stress include agitation, frustration, being moody and irritated. You will feel like you are either losing control, or that you just want to take control.
– Feeling overwhelmed also adds to stress, and if you work in a stressful environment, you are likely to feel worse.
– If you have difficulty relaxing and quieting your mind, even at night, this can cause insomnia.
– Stress can also cause you to lose weight or start over-eating.
– Low self-esteem can develop, and then depression kicks in. Feeling lonely, worthless and avoiding people is also a sure sign of high stress levels.
– Physically you will have low energy, headaches, and an upset stomach, including diarrhoea, constipation, or nausea. Even your muscles hurt, and you can experience anxiety attacks.
– Stress also affects your immune system negatively, so you are prone to catching cold or getting sick.
– Loss of libido is another of the symptoms of stress. So are nervousness, shaking, and hearing a ringing in your ears. A dry mouth, sweaty hands and difficulty swallowing can also occur.
– Cold or sweaty hands and feet and excessive sweating which you have not experienced before, and clenching your jaw and grinding teeth are also symptoms.
– Loss of concentration also occurs.
If you have more than one of these symptoms, you should consult your doctor.
