#ThrowbackThursday – April 1985
The Herald goes back, way back, to April 1985 for this week’s #ThrowbackThursday.
It’s Throwback Thursday, so the Herald went back in time, to April 1985, to see what was in the news.
• The then mayor, Andre Rossouw, denied that his pigeon hobby would get preference over his council duties.
• Finsbury had its own swimming pool thanks to a generous donation by the Randfontein Estates Gold Mine group and a lot of effort from the Randfontein Town Council.
• Seven burglars were convicted and sentenced to a total of 20 years’ imprisonment for burglaries committed during the period July 1984 to January 1985.
• The 10 Commandments for motorcycle riders, one of which is to be considerate and acknowledge courtesies, were introduced.
• The Herald introduced Hoërskool Goudrand’s new principal, Ben Engelbrecht.
• The Herald was still the newspaper of choice and the most read paper in the town. According to an information piece by Readership Data Library, residents of Randontein and Westonaria prefer reading the Herald on a more regular basis. The dailies that came closest to the Herald were Rapport and the Sunday Times.
Below you will find more news as reported in the Herald’s April editions.
