#ThrowbackThursday – 3 October 1986

The Herald goes back, way back, to 3 October 1986 for this week’s #ThrowbackThursday.

It’s Throwback Thursday, so the Herald went back in time to 3 October 1986 with the highlight story being on the front page with the headline Munisipaliteit Bespaar.

The Herald reported at the time that councillor Roy Harris said the municipality would be open from 7.20am to 4pm to use the daylight and thus save electricity. Mauritz Zietsman, Secretary of the Mayor, said that the stereotypical system of an 8am to 5pm workday was something of the past.

Other interesting headlines at the time:

Alban Barnard, Pick n Pay manager, took action and helped the police to arrest three armed robbers.More than R40 000 was recovered. According to the assistant manager, Stefan Gouws, four men came into the shop, looking for work. They forced him to open the safe at gunpoint. Alban, who was not in the office at the time, noticed that something was amiss and called the police.
