The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has been inundated with calls from its beneficiaries regarding fraud by people posing as its employees.

These impostors are allegedly asking Sassa beneficiaries to swipe their cards more than once, in an effort to maximise bank charges.

Paseka Letsatsi, Sassa spokesperson reminded people that its cash payments will be done through the South African Post Office (SAPO) starting on Monday, 8 October 2018.

“In the past, electronic payments were done through the post office and ATMs, and all electronic payments will start a day before the first of the month going forward. Beneficiaries are requested not to request receipts when doing balance enquires at ATMs and should rather view their balances on the ATM screen to avoid unnecessary bank charges.

They should also keep their PINs a secret and not disclose them to anyone, not even to Sassa officials,” read the statement. Sassa wishes to inform beneficiaries that it does not endorse any financial institution or their cards. 

“There is only one Sassa card. It is gold in colour with a Sassa and government emblem at the top on either side. If a beneficiary wants to receive a grant through a card other than that of Sassa, they have to provide Sassa with a request for bank payment form.” This form is available from banks, Sassa offices and www.sassa.gov.za.

“Beneficiaries have the right to change their method of payment from any bank to a Sassa card as well,” the statement concluded.
