Learners at Phahama Secondary School are proudly embracing their Sotho heritage and celebrating the traditions that connect them to their roots.

For the young learners, Heritage Day is not simply about wearing traditional clothing. It is a celebration of identity, family, language and the customs passed down from one generation to the next.

Learner Neo Makhongaone said being connected to his Sotho heritage gives him a strong sense of pride and belonging.

Fellow learner Rorisang Motaung said celebrating their culture was also an important way for young people to ensure that their traditions are not forgotten.

The learners said Heritage Day gives South Africans an opportunity to proudly showcase the different cultures that make up the country while also learning to appreciate one another’s traditions.
