A walk in the park for SPCA
This fundraising event is very important to the SPCA because they do not have enough funds for all Randfontein and Westonaria's expenses.
Dog lovers and their four-legged children got the chance to take a walk for a good cause this past weekend.
The Rand West SPCA hosted its annual Dog Walk event on Sunday, 8 October. This event is a big favourite in the community, and according to Lorika Boshoff, chairperson of Rand West SPCA, this year’s event was even bigger than previous years.
“This event is our biggest fundraising project for the year. In previous years, all the funds that were collected were profit, but this year we had expenses as we also tried a food stall,” she said.
This fundraising event is very important to the SPCA because they do not have enough funds for all Randfontein and Westonaria’s expenses.
“The event grew very much this year and we had almost 80 entries. Last year it was only about 50 entries. There are even people who do not have dogs who participated just for fun. It’s this kind of support that warms our hearts.”
Lorika said that they did a lot more marketing this year and Spiffs Dog Salon was their co-host for the event. Craig Harrison, DA councillor, helped with the arrangements with the Traffic Department.
“He phoned out of the blue and asked what he could do to help. We appreciate everyone’s help so much, because we as a community must all join hands,” she said.
This year’s dog walk was about 5km and according to Lorika the route was safe for the dogs with a few water points with baths and treats along the way. They also had a shuttle for dogs that got tired or hot.
“We had a lucky draw with great prizes sponsored by Spiffs Dog Salon and other individuals and businesses of Randfontein. It was a lovely event and every person and every dog had fun,” she said.
They also had a promotion for microchips during the event.
