#MunicipalMonday: Eskom wish granted – residents to cough up more?

For this week's special #MunicipalMonday, the Herald hit the streets to find out what residents had to say about the Eskom tariff increases, and the fact that they will have to pay more for electricity.

Randfontein residents are unhappy with the news that we might have to cough up more for electricity over the next three years.

Reports have indicated that the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) granted the country’s electricity public utility, Eskom, a 9,4 per cent tariff hike in 2019. The worst news is that we can expect an 8,1 per cent increase for 2020 and another increase of 5,2 per cent in 2021.

Jolandie Pieterse said people’s salaries will also have to be increased to afford the tariffs.

The Herald hit the streets to find out how Randfonteiners feel about it, considering Eskom’s current dire situation. Some said it will overburden the economy and will leave many to suffer even more than they already do.

Heidi van Wyk said the poor will be the most affected by this increase.

An article by the Herald‘s mother newspaper, The Citizen, reported that, “Eskom’s current tariff application has encountered strong opposition, with the private sector, opposition parties and pressure groups saying if it were granted by Nersa the impact on the sluggish economy would be dire.” Read the full story on their website [https://citizen.co.za/news/south-africa/government/2097203/electricity-to-increase-by-9-4-this-year/]
