A couple was threatened with being shot and eventually carjacked by a group of men as they parked their vehicle in the Mandela informal settlement in Bekkersdal last week.
Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson explained, “At about 8pm on Friday, 15 March, the victim was with his girlfriend and had just parked his vehicle next to his gate to open when he was accosted by a group of suspects. They opened the passenger door and instructed the girlfriend to get out, and fired a shot before driving off.”

Lefakane added that an intensified intelligence-driven operation by the District Trio Tracing Unit followed and led to the arrest of three suspects aged between 33 and 36 as well as the recovery of two firearms and ammunition.
The suspects will be charged with carjacking, attempted murder and being in possession of an illegal firearm as well as ammunition and are expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.
Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, commended the members for job well done and also thanked the community for the information that led to the arrests.
“We will continue with this kind of operations and remove all illegal firearms from the area,” Swart said.
