UPDATE R’fontein substation fire: Power restored to most areas
Power has been restored to most of the suburbs in Randfontein affected by the explosion and fire at a substation. More transformers are to be installed this week – municipality.
Power has been restored to most suburbs in Randfontein following an explosion and fire at a Randfontein substation on Saturday morning, 6 April.
According to Tshidiso Thlaripe, Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) spokesperson it took at last eight hours to restore power.

“It took plenty of manpower and electricians from both Eskom and ourselves to restore the electricity supply. One transformer is up and running, that is why were able to reconnect the affected areas. New transformers will be installed during the course of this week.”

Residents have expressed their satisfaction and appreciation on social media, thanking those involved for their speedy service to restore the power supply. Some residents have, however, said they were still without power.”

Asked about the exact cause of the fire, Thlaripe said, “It has not been determined as yet. We do know that a transformer burnt.”
