The South African Synod Church, in partnership with US author, Professor Robert Vinson, launched a book based on the life of ANC stalwart, Albert Luthuli, in Randgate on Friday, 5 July.
Speaking at the launch, Professor Vinson said the book, entitled Ohio Short Histories of Africa Albert Luthuli was not simply a history book, but a book aiming to help many modern leaders follow Luthuli’s footsteps, leadership qualities and ethics.

The professor said while researching and writing the book, he was thinking a lot about the kind of leadership Luthuli depicted, since he had realised that leadership in both the US and South Africa had been compromised.
He said, “We have seen that it can be catastrophic when we don’t have strong leadership at the top”.
Professor Vinson then said a leader must set a good example for those below him so they can follow in his footsteps. If a bad leader is at the helm, the same principle will apply, but it will end badly.
“I thought very much about Luthuli as someone who made decisions not to enrich himself, but put other people first.”
