Northam Rhinos emerged as league champions after a 49–39 victory against Randfontein Rugby Club’s first team in the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) Grand Challenge final at Greenhills Stadium on Saturday, August 29.

The Rhinos led 22–17 at halftime before Teine came out firing in the second half. However, two quick tries and a penalty following errors in the middle of the half gave the Rhinos the advantage they needed to pull away.

Randfontein’s tries came from Johan Swart, Rudi Marx, Louis Smit, Michael Tolmay and Dewalt Sonnekus. Captain and flyhalf Keagan Fortune added four conversions and two penalties.

Earlier, Randfontein’s U21 side lost 87–17 to Pirates Rugby in their semi-final. Gontse Malepe and Gomolemo Modisakeng scored the tries, while Keagan Taylor added a penalty and conversion, with Neo Maloisane scoring another conversion.

In the other finals, Northam Rhinos beat Pukke 37–29 in the third team final, while Pukke edged the Rhinos 39–36 in the second team final.

Despite missing out on the Grand Challenge title, Teine’s impressive campaign has made the whole Randfontein community proud.
