UPDATE Elandsvlei crash: ‘Victims trapped or burnt to death’

Police say the three victims were either trapped and died, or burnt to death, in Monday's horror crash between a truck and a car in Elansdvlei.

Local police have indicated that the three victims of Monday’s horror crash between a truck and light motor vehicle in Elandsvlei were either pinned in the wreckage and died, or burnt to death in the fire that followed.

Captain Raymond Sebonyane, West Rand District Police spokesperson, confirmed that three people died in the collision on the Ventersdorp Road in Elandsvlei on Monday afternoon, 22 July.

He said the light motor vehicle, identified as an Opel Astra, and the truck, which was towing two trailers, collided before the truck overturned and caught fire.

“Two men inside the truck – the driver and a passenger – burnt to death inside the truck, while the driver of the light motor vehicle was trapped in the car. All three were declared dead on scene by Randfontein Emergency Services (EMS). The ages of the deceased are not known at this stage,” he said.

Three bodies were recovered from the accident scene.

He added that a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

According to Bennie Mohlabeng, Regional Commander of the Randfontein Fire and Rescue Services, it took until 2am this morning (Tuesday, 23 July) to clear the accident scene.
