Toekies’ water supply under threat?

A Toekomsrus resident fears that the entire area could run out of water due to water being wasted.

Elton Smith, a resident of Toekomsrus, said thousands of litres of water are being wasted due to a faulty/ damaged main water line.

Smith claimed that since last week Thursday, 18 July, his yard has been filled with water and he fears that the situation might lead to the entire area running out of water.

Elton Smith said he has reported the matter to the municipality eight times, without a response.

“So far, I have tried to report the matter to the municipality eight times, and on Friday, 19 July, there was someone here who just came in and out. The person said there is no special equipment available to fix the pipe.”

Smith claimed he was told the wasted water comes from a main water line.

“I got a plumber out to try and sort out the problem, but he said he could not shut off the water supply because the water line supplies water to many homes Toekomsrus, and besides that, the pressure is far too strong,” Smith said.

Smith added that the situation is making it difficult for his family and his tenants to live on the property.

The water has been flowing for the past five days, non-stop.

“I would like this problem to be fixed as soon as possible. I have tenants at the back who cannot access some parts of the house. And the extreme cold is just making things worse.”

Pule Ramphore, the DA councillor for the area said the issue is not only affecting the Smith family, it will affect the supply of water to Toekomsrus.

“We are truly disappointed that the municipality is not assisting. It has been five days since the problem started. This is worrying because we are talking about clean water that can amount to millions of rands, going to waste straight into the drains,” Ramphore said.
