Municipality prays about gender-based violence

Women arrived in large numbers at the local municipality to say enough is enough and that violence against women and children should stop.

Women gathered in prayer at the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) on Monday, 9 September not only to highlight gender-based violence throughout the country, but to condemn it too.

Brenda Mahuma, Rand West City’s Executive Mayor, made the call for the prayer meeting to take place.

Women and men gathered to listen.

This comes after the recent violation and murder of 19-year-old University of Cape Town student, Uyinene Mrwetyana, and the spate of other violent acts perpetrated against women and children that have been reported in the media.

Mayor Mahuma led the morning with a few gripping words, followed by a prayer by Pastor Dineo Molotsana.

Executive Mayor, Councillor Brenda Mahuma.

“Women came here in the numbers to say ‘Enough!’ to the violence against women and children, not only in Randfontein but South Africa as a whole. Stop the senseless killings and murders,” she said.

After the prayer morning, all the women marched out of the RWCLM to hand over a memorandum at the ANC building and the police station.
