Festive season police operation kicks off

Bekkersdal Police have kick-started their festive-season operations in their hot-spot areas on Tuesday, 29 October.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, spokesperson for the Bekkersdal Police, the operations will be conducted on a weekly basis by engaging the community through awareness campaigns, roadblocks, and educational and outreach programmes.

According to Lefakane, members of the community will also be encouraged to report any criminal activity, and educated to be less prone to criminals by not walking in the streets at night.

“The principle of one docket, one suspect was introduced to minimise the rate of unsolved cases and better the conviction rate,” she said.

Lefakane added that crimes such as common robberies, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, murder and domestics violence are often committed during the festive season, but the operation will also be focused on reducing them.

“The operation will be conducted throughout the festive season and all those who find themselves on the wrong side of the law will be brought to book,” she added.

Colonel Tinus Swart, station commander of the Bekkersdal Police also urged the community to work with the police and refrain from opening cases and later withdrawing them.
