Police have got Toekies’ back this festive season

Randfontein Police conducted a crime awareness campaign in Toekomsrus in an effort to keep senior citizens safer during the festive season.

The Randfontein Police conducted a crime awareness campaign in Toekomsrus on Saturday, 2 November, in an effort to keep senior citizens safer during the coming festive season.

According to Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police spokesperson, most victims just suffer in silence as they fear more victimisation for reporting crime.

“Among such victims are elderly citizens who are pensioners. They are taken advantage of for their monthly Sassa grants, usually by those who are supposed to care of them; namely their grandchildren,” Hendricks said.

Hendricks said talking face-to-face with the victims will empower them to come forward and report every crime that occurs near them.

Constable Portia Mabala of Randfontein Police Social Crime Prevention Unit, said the campaign was also aimed at members of savings clubs, who often carry large sums of money after payouts.

“We want people to be careful of robberies, especially during this time of the year. It would really be unfair for someone who has been saving the whole year to lose it all in a robbery.

“It is better if people carry cards, rather than cash. We are also appealing to the community to always request the police to escort them to the banks when they need to make withdrawals,” Mabala said.
