Randfontein retailers unite for the needy
More than five hundred senior citizens were fed by the Randfontein Superspar and Clover on Friday 1 November.
More than five hundred senior citizens were provided with a meal by the Randfontein Superspar in partnership with Clover on Friday 1 November.
This was a community project that sought to relieve poverty among those who depended on Sassa grants.
Safura Dawood, co-owner of the supermarket, said the initiative was prompted by the fact that many families depending on government grants are poverty-stricken.
“We are well supported by the Sassa customers on the 1st day of every month. We usually cook for them and put the food outside, but this time we decided to help the elderly people.
“Instead of focusing on everyone, we focused on our gogos and the elderly men because we have found that many young people are living off their grandparents’ Sassa grants.
“We wanted to ease their burden of having to feed many people with their limited income,” Safura said.
Nadia Welkom of Clover said most of the elderly from impoverished families often go to bed without any decent meal.
“This was another way for both Spar and Clover to say thank you for the miles they have put in, especially considering the fact that some of them are suffering from poor health.”
