Raising funds for all SA farmers

The Du Plessis family and friends have taken it upon themselves to raise funds for farmers suffering under the burden of the drought experienced across SA.

With minimal rainfall experienced across the country, resident Andrea du Plessis along with her family and friends have taken it upon themselves to raise funds for farmers.

The funds were raised by selling cupcakes to locals and asking for money donations at the Westonaria Pick n Pay on Saturday, 2 November.

The Citizen, the Herald’s mother newspaper, reported on Monday that according to the African Farmers Association of South Africa (Afasa), South Africa is ‘already a drought disaster area’.

“Afasa has urged government to intervene in support of farmers in drought-stricken provinces, citing North West, Limpopo, the Western Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape and the Eastern Cape as the hardest hit,” the article stated. Afasa further warned that, “Drought was so severe and spreading beyond the seven provinces, affecting all farmers, horticulture, livestock and agriculture”.

Andrea said the project will go a long way to relieve some stress among the farmers and make sure that food supply remains steady.

“We have received quite a number of good comments for this initiative on the day. Others said we would do anything for money, but we had to explain that this initiative is, in fact, beneficial to everyone. We have managed to sell a significant number of the cupcakes and we would like to thank everyone who supported us on the day,” Andrea said.

She added that the fundraiser would continue in various parts of Rand West City.
