Elderly, disabled treated to early Christmas

A total of 150 elderly people and people with disabilities from Toekomsrus were treated to a Christmas lunch by Meals on Wheels.

One hundred and fifty elderly and disabled people of Toekomsrus were treated to a Christmas lunch by the Meals on Wheels organisation on Tuesday, 26 November.

According to Bruce Stevens, coordinator of the initiative, it was an effort to acknowledge the poverty that is rife in the area. Those who are vulnerable, especially children, those with disabilities and the elderly, are most effected.

“This year, we decided to give a special treat to our elderly citizens and the disabled,” he said, adding that the gesture was meant to put smiles on the faces of those who do not have the luxury of celebrating Christmas.

“This is simply a way for us to give back to the community; to show them that no matter the circumstances they are living in, we are here to help them in any way possible.”

Bruce thanked a Pick n Pay, Stubs Butchery, Donald Stevens, Brazil Super Rite and Seventh Day Adventist Church for making the day possible.

“We thank every sponsor that has come on board. Without them, this would not have happened,” Bruce added.
