According to Brigadier Mathapelo Peters of the Gauteng Police, multi-disciplinary crime-combating operations in Gauteng during the weekend resulted in the arrest of more than 980 people in total.

These operations form part of the Safer Festive Season Operations, which will continue until the end of January.”

Brigadier Peters said suspects nabbed on the West Rand and in Sedibeng were arrested for crimes including armed robbery, murder, assault, business robbery, housebreaking, driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of drugs, among other.

All suspects are due to appear in their respective magistrates’ courts.

“Preceding these successes, between Wednesday 8 and Thursday, 9 January, police impounded more than 30 vehicles and arrested over 800 suspects during the O Kae Molao operations conducted across all the districts in the Gauteng province,” Peters added.

Peters further warned that police will be on the lookout for criminals who are targeting unsuspecting students at institutions of higher learning.

“Police will maintain a strong visibility at hot spots to protect these vulnerable and unsuspecting students,” Peters said.
