Torched municipal building now a drug den

Residents demand that the municipal office building that was damaged during a protest three years ago be reconstructed.

Toekomsrus residents say they are fed up because their municipal building has been neglected for almost three years after being destroyed during a service delivery protest in 2017.

According to Nicollete Kiewietz, Ward 8 councillor and who used to work in the building, it was to be reconstructed the same year and the insurance company did pay out. The question is why hasn’t it been rebuilt.

Kiewiets claimed the previous mayor received the money to have the building restored but to date, it remained dilapidated and there is no progress whatsoever.

She went on to say that empty promises have also been made during IDP meetings, yet nothing happens.

“We demand that the building be rebuilt during the course of the year, because our senior and disabled citizens who used to get services there are suffering. They do not have the money to travel between Toekomsrus and town. This building must be rebuilt immediately because we are sick and tired of lies and empty promises,” Kiewietz added.

Another concerned resident, Rashida Abrahams said, “For us as young people, considering the drug abuse in this area, leaving a building like this is somewhat of an encouragement for criminals. It simply means people can go on with crime and drug abuse.”

Abrahams added that there was a growing concern that the building was used as a drug den or hideout for criminals.

“The money has been paid out, but all of us are wondering what it was used for. We are now demanding answers because we cannot be patient with the municipality,” Abrahams said.
