More than 130 arrested in Westonaria police crackdown

Police have arrested more than 130 people in operation held in Westonaria and Bekkersdal.

A total of 135 people were nabbed during Operation Okae Molao in Westonaria and Bekkersdal on Thursday, 23 January.

The operation was led by Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police commissioner.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, suspects were arrested for the following offences including possession of gold bearing material, possession of dagga and dangerous weapons, illegal immigration, illegal mining and dealing in dagga.

Lefakane said in addition, a number of suspects were also arrested for other crimes including domestic violence, copper cable theft, common robbery, contempt of court, malicious damage to property, pointing of a firearm, shoplifting, public violence, intimidation, robbery, housebreaking and theft, business burglary, hijacking, possession of drugs, possession of stolen property and fraud.

“Expired food was also confiscated with fines being issued. All arrested suspects will appear in their various Magistrates’ Courts soon,” Lefakane added.
