Local security company EPR revealed that at least two mini substations have either been targeted or vandalised, leading to blackouts in Randfontein recently.
Johan Krogh, General Manager of EPR, confirmed to the Herald on Tuesday, 3 March that two mini substations in Helikon Park and Greenhills were stripped of their components on Saturday, 29 February.

He urged the community to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity at any mini substation or substation.
“It is expensive to replace and repair them. Our municipality does not have the funds to repair or replace the stolen parts,” he said.
Krogh added that EPR has either repaired or installed an alarm system free of charge at the affected mini substations.
“Should members of the community want to ‘adopt a substation in their area, they are welcome to contact us on 0861 692 195/ 011 693 6000.”
Krogh concluded by saying, “As an active member of the Rand West Municipality Ratepayers Association (RAMRA), we (EPR) are adamant to ensure that our infrastructure remains in place. We thank members of the community who have ‘adopted’ a substation in their area and are sponsoring the monthly monitoring and response fee,” he added.
