UPDATE: R559 cleared after early-morning protest

Traffic officers and police are still on scene, and they will monitor the situation throughout the day — Traffic Chief.

Authorities have managed to clear the R559 along Kocksoord and Finsbury towards Carletonville after an early-morning service delivery protest by residents of the Sporong informal settlement.

According to Kenny Mampondo, the Rand West City Traffic Chief, about 50 people had taken to the streets as early as 5am to demand houses from the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM).

“The group barricaded the road with all sorts of objects,” Mampondo said.

When they arrived at the scene, he said, the group was waiting to be addressed by the MMC for Human Settlements within the RWCLM.

“Unfortunately, we did not have any details, but they complained about other people getting houses while they were not getting any. Although the group was not violent, we could not accept that they had barricaded a public road, therefore they were dispersed by the police.”

Mampondo confirmed that at the moment, the R559 is open and traffic is flowing normally.

“Traffic officers and police are still on scene, and they will monitor the situation throughout the day,” Mampondo concluded.
