Angry residents of Bekkersdal protested outside the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court last Thursday when three suspects appeared for the alleged murder of a 49-year-old business owner in the Spooktown informal settlement in Bekkersdal.
According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, residents carried placards with messages demanding that justice be served in the name of the slain businessman who was shot and killed during a robbery on Friday, 28 February.

“Residents demanded that the accused, who are aged between 26 and 28, be denied bail,” Lefakane said.
Explaining what had happened on that fateful day, she said a woman who was busy cooking was startled by a gunshot.

“Her wounded husband entered the room followed by three armed men wearing balaclavas. He told his wife to give the robbers whatever they wanted and she allegedly handed them two cellphones as well as an undisclosed amount of money.
“Unfortunately, one of the robbers fired another shot, fatally wounding the man before fleeing on foot,” Lefakane said.
