High-ranking traffic cop robbed with a panga

High-ranking traffic cop threatened with a panga and robbed of his firearm in a Randfontein mall.

A high-ranking officer of the Rand West City Traffic Department had his firearm taken from him while he was waiting to be served at a bank at Village Square Mall.

Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police spokesperson confirmed the incident that occurred at about 11am on Thursday, 23 April.

“The assailant threatened the officer with a panga while he was standing in a queue inside the bank. He subsequently robbed him of his firearm and fled. No one was injured.”

Two days later, the suspect was arrested.

Sergeant Hendricks explained that during an integrated mining operation and intense investigation on Saturday, 25 April the suspect, who is 26 years of age, was found in a shack in the Zenzele informal settlement. The officer’s firearm was also recovered.

The suspect will appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court soon.

Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein Police station commander applauded the detectives and members of the Randfontein Police for their dedication and swift response.

He added he was happy that another firearm had been removed from the streets.
