Several arrested as mob invades municipality premises

Security workers gather at the municipality after being approached by a new company while they are still working under the company that employed them.

Chaos erupted at the offices of the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) on Thursday due to an alleged labour issue.

According to Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police spokesperson, several arrests were made after a large group of people had invaded the building.

“When we got there we found more than 50 people gathered in the hall. Some were forcing their way in while others were blocking the entrance. We subsequently managed to get all of them out of the municipality premises.”

After the mob allegedly refused to listen to the MMC for Public Safety who ordered them to leave the premises, minimum force had to be used a few minutes later to disperse the crowd.

According to Vusi Dlomo, one of the security company workers, they demanded to be addressed by the mayor and their security company founder.

“It’s a labour issue that needs to be engaged by the municipality and two security companies. A new security company approached us with new uniforms and contracts to sign, while we are still working under the company that employed us. Our contract with them ends only next year.

“We confronted the municipality management and demanded they tell us what was going on, but they said they knew nothing about the other security company. We want answers and need to speak with the mayor and municipality management to find out what’s going on,” he said.
