‘Parents helped us cope better’ – FJL Wells Primary

FJL Well Primary Mine School praises parents for going above and beyond to ensure learners did school work during lockdown.

FJL Wells Primary Mine School thanked parents for making sure learners continued doing school work during lockdown.

Sello Mphatswe, acting principal and spokesperson said parents and the school communicated through WhatsApp to keep the education boat afloat at home in challenging times.

“When lockdown started, everyone was gripped by fear and anxiety, but parents played their part in making sure that children do their school work while they were home.”

He said parents also planted a seed to help manage Covid-19 better and ease the pressure, although learners still have to be reminded constantly to keep their distance and avoid contact.

We follow guidelines provided by the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) on how this problem can be managed at school,” Mphatswe said.

He added that since the school reopened in June, they had two cases of Covid-19; causing them to close temporarily. He said he is glad none of their learners were infected or showed any worrying symptoms. However, the bigger problem is dealing with squeezing everything into what is left of the academic school year – automatically putting pressure on teachers and children.

Learners also have to be reminded constantly to keep their distance and avoid contact.

“I can say 80 to 85 per cent of the learners could carry on from the work they have been doing while at home without any trouble. However, there are those who have not made progress,” Mphatswe added.
