Dagga weighing 120kg, over 200 arrests in W’aria operation

Police in the West Rand District made their presence felt during a major operation on 1 October, this time in Westonaria.

Another major police operation, this time in Westonaria, led to the confiscation of large amounts of dagga and alcohol, and over 200 arrests on the first day of October.

Warrant Officer Peter Masooa, West Rand District Police and stand-in Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said Correctional Services, the Department of Community Safety, Rand West City Traffic Department, and Mavume Security were also involved in the operation.

The operation focused on roadblocks, crime prevention, illegal trading in liquor and second-hand goods, as well as making the whole area safe in terms of section 205 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa 108 of 1996 to combat and investigate crime, maintain public order, and protect and secure the residents of the West Rand District.

“Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police commissioner also emphasised adherence to the regulations of the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002,” said Masooa.

The following arrests were made during the operation:

• murder – three
• assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm – 52
• attempted murder – nine
• housebreaking and theft – 14
• possession of stolen property – five
• possession of dagga – two
• dealing in liquor without licence – six

“Four bags with dagga weighing 120kg, and 716 380ml of alcohol were also confiscated,” said Warrant Officer Masooa.

All the suspects will appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 5 October.

Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police commissioner thanked all involved in the operation.
