The Carletonville Police have issued a warning to motorists using the N12 joining the P111 towards Carletonville following a spate of hijackings.
According to Warrant Officer Peter Masooa, the West Rand District Police spokesperson, the latest hijacking occurred on Tuesday, 13 October, involving a man driving a delivery bakkie and trailer loaded with building material.
A silver VW Polo flashed lights at the bakkie driver and he stopped. Three men from the Polo approached him, grabbed him and threw him inside the Polo and drove off with him. He was dropped off at an unknown location.”
According to Masooa, everyone must be on the lookout for the silver Polo, as it is implicated in a number of hijackings.
He added that the bakkie and trailer are still missing.
“We as the police are aware that the hijackers use the same modus operandi of showing their victims that something is wrong with either the vehicle’s wheels or the load, just to make them stop. The hijackers are also aware that when you’re in motion it is difficult to take the vehicle from you and that you can be a danger to them,” said Masooa.
He therefore urged motorists to ignore anyone who tries to distract them and make them stop, and to keep driving.
The police gave the following tips to bear in mind in such instances:
• Don’t start to speed; it will show that you are scared
• Make them aware that you have seen their gestures and will be all right
• Take the shortest route to the police station
• Stop where there are people who can see and help
• Drivers should have crews
• Take a picture of the vehicle and send it to someone, or send a voice note to someone who can help, and keep the information
