Four children injured as school bus crashes into tree

'The driver of the bus realised the brakes had failed and chose to hit a tree instead of driving into oncoming traffic, as there were trucks on the road too' – Fire Chief.

Four children sustained minor injuries when their school bus crashed into a tree at the T-junction of Johannes and Ventersdorp Road in Elandsvlei on Thursday afternoon, 22 October.

Bennie Mohlabeng, Regional Commander of the Randfontein Fire and Rescue Services confirmed to the Herald on scene that the children were indeed learners from different primary schools, but he could not confirm which schools.

The driver of the bus realised the brakes had failed and chose to hit a tree instead of driving into oncoming traffic, as there were trucks on the road too. The bus had five occupants – four children and the driver. The children were transported to hospital for further treatment, while the driver did not sustain any injuries.”

Shortly thereafter, a group of people assisted in pushing the school bus away from the tree.

Various ambulances and other emergency services were on scene.
