Rand West City Walk For Purpose in aid of cancer

After the walk, the public were screened, tested and counselled for free.

Scores of people took to the Greenhills Stadium bright and early on Saturday morning, 24 October to show their support for cancer survivors and victims during the Rand West City Walk For Purpose.

Meshack Mnyakeni from Zallas 4 Life, a cancer NGO in partnership with the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM), Randwest Health and Social Development, #Arebueng, St Martin de Porres, Pillar of Strength, CDWs, Randfontein CWP, Horeb Kids and Colossus Athletic Club made the event possible.

Meshack, the head organiser of the walk, said the purpose of the walk was to launch an annual awareness campaign against cancer with the vision to mobilise for a government oncology centre within the Region, preferably in the Rand West City Sub-Region.

“Zallas 4 Life in partnership with the RWCLM as well as other NGOs and organisations will embark on a journey towards this vision, noting the health limitations within the City,” he said.

During the event, the community walked a 5km route through the streets of Randfontein, dressed in pink, white and purple to show their support and create awareness.

After the walk, the public were screened, tested and counselled for free. The focus was on cervical cancer, PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) testing, breast cancer screening as well as HIV testing and screening.

According to Meshack, this is viewed as the most successful campaign in the fight against any vital illnesses, particularly cancer.

He added that saving lives should be the business of every citizen.

“As the campaign progresses we will build formidable relations with other relevant organisations to accelerate services to be closer, less expensive and easily accessible to communities beyond financial viabilities,” he stated.
