Police spot illegal miners, find firearm and ammunition

Police find plastic bag inside a hole with a 9mm Norinco, one magazine and two live rounds belonging to illegal miners in Mohlakeng.

Randfontein Police found a firearm and ammunition left behind by fleeing illegal miners in Mohlakeng Extension 11 on Monday, 8 February.

According to Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, spokesperson for the Randfontein Police, the discovery was made when their Flexi A Crime Prevention team of Sergeant Tshepo Mosweu, Constable Margaret Mamaregane and Constable Braveman Mhlongo did normal patrols in the area.

“They spotted illegal miners busy in the field and approached them. The zama zamas noticed the police and ran away. While searching the surroundings the members noticed a plastic bag inside a hole and found a 9mm Norinco with its serial number filed off. In the bag they also found one magazine and two live rounds,” Hendricks said.

Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein Police station commander commended the members for a job well done.
