Police arrested several suspects, among them a 32-year-old drug dealer in Simunye as a result of a crime-prevention operation in and around the Bekkersdal policing precinct this past weekend.
According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, 11 suspects were arrested, some of whom for various drug-related crimes, while at the same time they enforced compliance by taverns around the informal settlement. All arrested suspects are to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.
Among those arrested were one person for being in possession of a dangerous weapon; one for possession of live ammunition; one for dealing in liquor without a licence; seven for possession of drugs, and one for dealing in drugs.
She said the Bekkersdal Intervention team aimed at addressing the causes of crime and preventing all acts which may threaten the safety and security of the community.
“Alcohol has been the biggest contributor to crime. Victims are either being shot at or robbed of their belongings while walking in the dark streets of the Holomisa and Tambo sections.
These criminals are armed and cover their faces with balaclavas and masks while targeting victims in their homes and businesses. They would break in by any means necessary, including forcing open doors and randomly shooting at innocent victims before fleeing with their victims’ money, electrical appliances and cellphones.”

Lefakane added that even though intensified patrols have been implemented, they believe it is only through partnership policing that these crimes could be curbed.
We appeal to the community to be vigilant and avoid walking in the streets during the night. Also please share any suspicious behaviour to the police rather than taking the law into your own hands (mob justice).”
Colonel Phumelele Matamela, the Bekkersdal Police station commander appreciated and thanked all police members for their hard work. She also extended her gratitude to community patrollers for always availing themselves.
“We will continue with these kinds of operations until there is no more space for criminals.”
